UMMOAELEWE
To Fernando Sesma Manzano
Sir: My name is (expressed in terrestrial characters and Spanish pronunciation) IEREE 86 conceived by IEREE 82.
Few days have passed since my settling in Madrid, and this beautiful Iberian city is not yet familiar to me.
Sir: Before I came to the capital, my brothers spoke to me of you in glowing terms. Our director, to whom I am subordinate, also very expressly charged me, with the request that you do not interpret it psychologically as a vulgar formula of courtesy but as a genuine expression of our sincere reactions of positive affection, to touch your chest symbolically as an interpretation of our spiritual alliance with your brain.
They have read me a beautiful poem which you were kind enough to dedicate to us. You are the only Earth person, of the many with whom we have been in contact in these decades, whose feelings towards us have been directed towards a spiritual attunement unexpected for beings like us, whose only objective at first was to carry out a methodical and scientific study of the civilization of planet Earth.
Your extraordinary sensitivity, your irrepressible love for the UAAAM (We call the Universe UAAAM) has surprised and moved us greatly.
Some days ago all the brothers of UMMO who tread this Planet were gathered in the city of ADELAIDE in South Australia. I was being given instructions for the journey to Spain, since I had never set foot on its soil. When my brother DEII 98 generated by DEII 97, before our superior IUU 1 generated by AINM 368, was dictating to me the list of Spaniards in contact with us, I asked, referring to you, sir:
What scientific speciality or field of Thought does he hold as his professional qualification? (You will perhaps not be unaware that our UMMOAELEWE (That is what we call the governing body of our Planet) gave us very precise instructions to restrict our contacts only to Earth men specialised in the sector of pure science, of thought, of technology and of art).
My young superior, to whom I am subordinate, answered me:

OEMMII OIAGAA GAEOAO AIOOIAO OEMII UIAA OEMII EABAYO UAAM.. IIA
This man is noble. This man loves the Universe: And that is enough!.
Believe me, in those words she expressed many ideas which you cannot even suspect if you try to judge by their laconism.
Immediately they offered me a long series of references about you. I already knew your poem days before it was sent to UMMO. For us a gesture such as yours, in dedicating those stanzas to us, holds a rich emotional content. I knew the poem was by a Spaniard called SESMA but I did not know his personality. Never has any Earth person with whom we have established verbal or postal relations tried to attune himself spiritually with us.
Your beautiful attempt to establish a spiritual bridge through poetic images will never be forgotten by us.
The translation we have made for our brothers of UMMO will perhaps not be to your liking. In truth, it would please us if one day, should you come to possess some linguistic knowledge of our language, you yourself made the appropriate corrections. I will understand that this poem is a cherished document for the History of relations between the two planets. We do not undertake a critique of its literary value. It is, moreover, extremely difficult for us to coordinate our aesthetic feelings, our literary valuation, with those of the man of Earth. If your stanzas were, on the contrary, commonplace, they would not lose great value in our minds, since your gesture would be the same.
My brother DEII 98, begotten by DEII 97, spoke of you with sadness; he thought of what you might have been with a rational education, with a comprehensive religious formation, with teaching means directed towards the field of thought as befits your psyche, similar to those we possess.
I would not wish to wound your modesty as a child-man (and you will be able to understand that the word child is not exactly pejorative) and therefore I prefer to keep silent about other feelings of mine. As an Earth person who does not know our mentality, you might perhaps judge them to be flattery, or even mockery.
I would like to hear your voice, to talk with you. But my superior has forbidden me to establish verbal telephone contact with anyone until my return to UMMO, and the brother accompanying me does not know the Spanish language.
My brothers who have left Spain will come back to the Iberian peninsula shortly. My present journey, after having spent some years in South America, is due to my forthcoming return to UMMO.
Despite everything, it is possible that my brother at present in Spain may communicate with you, although his language is unintelligible to you.
I have precise orders to suspend all the communications we had been carrying on until now with various Spanish men. Only to you, as a special mark of deference, do we write these paragraphs today. But immediately after the arrival of our brothers (I do not know whether by then we shall have left) the various men of science of this country, You and other persons will go on receiving the periodic reports that you were accepting until my brothers left.
For the moment I am becoming familiar with this capital, of which I had only literary and graphic references, without ever having had the opportunity to set foot in it. The only Spaniard I have been able to meet here is a young man with whom my brothers were in contact and with whom I now find myself. Nothing would have pleased me more than to see you and place my hand on your chest. But not all our wishes can be satisfied, and I submissively accepted this when my superior refused it for reasons that would be complex to list.
